Framers use mat board to separate the artwork for the frame’s glass. In the past, wood-based paper or chipboard was used as a spacer. However, wood-based pulp and paper products are bound together with a polymer called lignin. The problem is that lignin can break down over time, and this process of lignin decomposition produces acid as a byproduct. This acid can severely and irreversibly damage artwork. Worse still, sometimes this process of acidic damage can take decades.
